Kythera

Kythera (Kithera, Kythira), also known as Cerigo, is an island located south of Peloponnese, at the meeting point of Ionian, Aegean and the Sea of Crete. A blend of traditions, crossroads for the sailors for centuries, the southernmost of the Ionian islands is a uniquely charming sea kayaking destination. In this skills development, 5-days sea kayak circumnavigation of the island, we explore 65Nm of coastline, visit beautiful fish villages, experience genuine hospitality on land and stunning scenery from our cockpits.

This trip is planned and currently offered in a way that makes it suitable for intermediate paddlers. Experience in covering consequetive 10+Nm days and an overall confident sea kayaking performance in boat handling and paddling as part of a led sea kayak group in up to moderate sea states will be enough. Feel free to contact us for any help!

During this 5-day sea kayaking trip we stay at beautiful apartments at Ag. Pelagia, Avlemonas and Kapsali* and we also enjoy one camping overnight in order to get the chance to explore the remote, west coast of the island.

Whilst wild camping – we cook for our dinner, while when we stay in apartments, we enjoy Greek cuisine at some of the best local tavernas!

  • Meeting day:

We meet the team at Agia Pelagia where we prepare the kit, brief and plan the details for the sea kayaking adventure ahead. After having our preparations finished, we enjoy our dinner and then an overnight in rooms in Agia Pelagia, ready for the next morning!

  • Day 1: Agia Pelagia – Avlemonas (paddling distance:  12 Nm):

We start our sea kayaking circumnavigation of Kythera paddling on the east coast of the island heading SE. For the first half of our day on the water we explore the coast paddling under the beautiful formation of Kako Lagadi and later on, we paddle towards Diakofti and the shipwreck of the vessel Nordland (2000). We enjoy breaks for lunch and snacks on the way before we reach our destination for the day, the picturesque small village Avlemonas.

  • Day 2: Avlemonas – Kapsali (paddling distance: app. 11 Nm):

A day paddling between two charming villages and stations of our adventure, gets even better with the stunning walls of layers of sedimentary rock along parts of the south coast. We explore every inch of it! Making sure we keep our energy levels high (as in food stops…) later in the day we touch our hulls at Kapsali, the scenic fish village beneath the chora (mountainous capital) of the island. We settle into our rooms for two overnight stays.

  • Day 3: Kapsali – Avgo isl. -Kapsali (paddling distance: app. 8 Nm):

The third day of our sea kayaking trip is an optional, still amazing and not to be missed, round trip. The islet we can see at a bearing of 180 degrees from Kapsali, and in close proximity, is called Avgo (a.k.a Heetra for the locals) and this is where we are heading for. Semprevivum flower, Eleonora’s falcons, one landing point and a beautiful sea cave, as well as the wilderness and remoteness this rock exudes, are just few of the reasons it is worth a visit!

  • Day 4: Kapsali – Kalami (paddling distance: app. 14 Nm):

Heading for the west coast of this island we leave behind Kapsali and the civilization for a couple of days. The west coast is wild, mostly inaccessible and always delivering! With our bows pointing NW we slowly cover the 14Nm of this day’s itinerary exploring all the features on the way. An always fun dinner preparation and an overnight under the stars complete the day!

  • Day 5: Kalami – Agia Pelagia (paddling distance: app. 15 Nm):

The longest day of our sea kayaking adventure finds us paddling along the NW, N and NE part of the coast of Kythera. The still amazing scenery soon is combined with a great playground of rock gardens. Reaching the north end of the island we enjoy a break for lunch and relaxing time, before we head for the last few miles of this journey and arrive at the port of Agia Pelagia where accommodation is arranged. An always well-deserved dinner comes next!
